Part of the 1865 Ardonia arrocane season

Arrocane Four was a Category 1 arrocane that affected the Pearl Islands during July 1865. The fourth tropical cyclone and first arrocane of the 1865 Ardonia arrocane season, Four formed over the Ardonia Ocean on July 9 and initially moved generally northwestward before turning northward toward the Pearl Islands. The cyclone strengthened into an arrocane and reached its peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 986 mbar (29.12 inHg). Four subsequently weakened slightly before making landfall in the Pearl Islands with winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) and a pressure of 988 mbar (29.18 inHg). The cyclone weakened after landfall and degenerated into a remnant low on July 11 before dissipating on July 13.

Four caused $15.5 million in damage in 1865 USD, equivalent to approximately $318.5 million in 2026 USD, and three fatalities were attributed to the cyclone. All recorded impacts from Four occurred in the Pearl Islands.

The system that would become Arrocane Four originated over the Ardonia Ocean southeast of the Pearl Islands during early July. The disturbance moved generally northwestward and gradually became better organized, developing into a tropical depression at 12:00 UTC on July 9. The depression continued northwestward and strengthened into a tropical storm as it approached the Pearl Islands. Further intensification occurred shortly thereafter, and Four became the first arrocane of the 1865 Ardonia arrocane season.

As the cyclone approached the Pearl Islands, its track gradually turned toward the north-northwest. Four reached its peak intensity as a Category 1 arrocane, attaining maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 986 mbar (29.12 inHg). The cyclone subsequently weakened slightly while continuing toward the islands.

Four made landfall in the Pearl Islands with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) and a central pressure of 988 mbar (29.18 inHg). After landfall, the cyclone weakened below arrocane intensity and continued generally northward. Four subsequently degenerated into a remnant low at 12:00 UTC on July 11. The remnant circulation persisted for approximately two additional days before dissipating on July 13.

Preparations and impact

There are no known records of significant preparations being undertaken in advance of Arrocane Four. The cyclone occurred 87 years before the establishment of the National Arrocane Center (NAC) and Ardonia Meteorological Organization (AMO) in 1952, and no modern tropical cyclone watches or warnings were issued for the storm.

Arrocane Four affected the Pearl Islands after making landfall with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) and a central pressure of 988 mbar (29.18 inHg). All recorded impacts from the cyclone occurred within the islands. Four caused approximately $15.5 million in damage in 1865 USD, equivalent to approximately $318.5 million in 2026 USD. Three fatalities were attributed to the arrocane. No additional damage or fatalities were recorded elsewhere.
